About the fund

The Outdoor Community Play Fund will support charities providing outdoor community play opportunities for children and families experiencing disadvantage, as defined by SIMD. Up to £15,000 was available to be applied for by registered Scottish charities meeting the criteria set out below.

Funded by Scottish Government, Inspiring Scotland’s Thrive Outdoors team will manage the fund, supporting charities delivering outdoor play to change, learn from and enhance the lives of children, young people, families, and communities.

Funding will support 

  • the development of better and more opportunities to play outside, leading to improved physical health, mental health, and wellbeing 
  • families and communities to gain a deeper awareness of the benefits of outdoor play connecting people and place
  • increasing perceived value and support of play opportunities for children and young people  

Applications for this fund are now closed. 

What can you apply for?

Registered Scottish charities could apply for up to £15,000 of funding for outdoor community play projects that are free to access and that deliver free play opportunities. The proposal may include staffing costs, materials and resources that help facilitate free play, outdoor clothing, management fees, etc.  

Please note that funding is for outdoor community play only. Therefore, structured sports activities and sport-related training are not eligible under this funding. 

Applications that fit the following criteria were considered:

  • They are a registered Scottish charity
  • The charity applying has experience of providing outdoor community play for children/families
  • The charity is delivering in an area SIMD decile 1 or 2 
  • Play provision will be in an outdoor setting following the Play Rangers model 
  • Play provision will be free/open access 
  • The charity applying can demonstrate how children’s/ young people’s/ families’ voices are included  in the planning and development of their outdoor community play opportunity
