The Benefits of Play Go a Long Way

Liam is 8 and lives in Stranraer, his family life has been difficult with both his parents having had substance issues and Liam having spent some time in foster care. Liam began attending Stranraer’s YMCA Y Play Project at his local park as soon as it started. Initially Liam’s behaviour was disruptive, often interrupting and upsetting other children playing.

The Y Project brings play to children living in the rural areas of Stranraer. Play Rangers help children to see the opportunities for play in their local areas making the most of the public spaces that exist.

To support Liam the Y Play Project Play Rangers would spend time discussing his behaviour, and as months passed the talks reduced and his behavior improved. Liam progressed so well, he became a Play Leader. This ‘job’ involved helping the Play Rangers make sure everyone was behaving and having fun. This role lifted Liam’s confidence as he was trusted to lead and children happily played with him.

The progress Liam has made is clear, according to the Play Rangers "Liam is a calmer, happier and friendlier child now and a real joy to have around. He has improved social skills with both other children and adults. He can still be a wee monkey now and again but we feel he has grown in confidence"

John’s Mum and Dad are delighted with the difference Y Play Project has made to Liam and the family. "He is a different wee boy at home and school. I was at a parent’s night at school and his teacher said he is much better behaved."

"At home, everyone is happier. Liam comes in from Y Play and can’t wait to tell us what he has been up to. We have dinner, do home work and before we know it, it’s bedtime. Before Y Play he would come in from school and within minutes he would be fighting with his wee sister Jenny. Then we would end up shouting and that sometimes could go on all night."

Liam’s School can also see a difference

‘’There is a noticeable improvement in Liam's attitude towards his work. He is now concentrating more and able to work independently to complete tasks. He is really enjoying more challenging writing and taking on leadership roles - this is great!
